The Chubasco Blanket

An intermediate-friendly knitted blanket– my Chubasco Blanket– is a free pattern here on the blog! Read through my inspiration, materials and stitch pattern used. Or scroll on down for the free pattern.

Introduction + Design

The Chubasco Blanket is the sister blanket to the Chubasco Sweater (find it here) and the Chubasco Shawl (find it here), and as they do, it features the Crossed Loops St. This time, I’ve manipulated the stitch pattern to make it into a Chevron Motif, making it a very fun and classic design.  The Crossed Loops St evokes the unexpectedness of Spring rain, and making it into a blanket to cozy up in a coldish Spring evening just… closes the circle.

The Chubasco Blanket is worked bottom up, in the Crossed Loops St in Chevron motif, with bottom, upper and side edges in Seed St.

A nice challenge!

I’m not gonna lie, the stitch pattern used for this pattern is not particularly easy. You’ll definitely have to pay attention to your stitches, specially on the Right Side rows, where most of the action happens. HOWEVER. The stitch pattern is so beautiful and detailed! It’s completely worth the effort. Plus, once you have a few row repeats under your belt it really becomes intuitive and you will love it, I’m sure of it!

The right-size blanket

This is a lap blanket, 48.5 in/113 cm wide and 53 in/136 cm long. This size is great because it’s won’t take that much time, but it will give you time to really get to know the stitch pattern, and it will keep you cozy still. And it could totally work as a baby blanket, just use pastels!

Free Pattern

The pattern is available for free in this blog post. This blog has ads so I can provide the pattern for free.

Yarn

I chose to knit this shawl with Julie Aselin’s Journey Worsted. It’s hand-dyed, and the quality was just what I was looking for. Incredible soft to the touch, which made it a pleasure to knit, and the color is bright and so accurate to the one deppicted on their website. You can check where to get Julie Asselin’s yarn HERE.

For this blanket you will need:

Julie Asselin Journey Worsted (4 oz/115 g; 200 yds/185 m; 80% Rambouillet, 20% Targhee). 12 skeins in Verge d’Or colorway.

Or

Approximately 48 oz/1380 g; 2400 yds/2200 m, 100% merino wool, of Worsted size yarn (size 4, according to the Craft Yarn Council Standards), similar to the ones on this link.

Materials

Needles

US 6/4 mm circular needles (to accommodate the large amount of stitches)  40 in/100 cm long or size to obtain correct gauge.

Note: Adjust needle sizes to obtain gauge.

Notions

Tapestry needle.

Gauge

19 sts and 28 rows = 4 in/10 cm in Stockinette stitch with size US 6/4 mm needles, after blocking.

NOTE: Since this is not a wearable item, checking gauge is not absolutely vital, but it’s always advisable.
